2021 impact assessment: better exam results in ARES schools

In February 2021, enumerators from Ol Pejeta's three community zones surveyed 11 of the 24 schools that had received ARES. They heard from 185 people: 11 principals, 43 teachers and 131 students.

Principals

  • 88% said ARES had contributed to better KCSE results. The combined school mean rose from 3.157 in 2017 to 3.225 in 2018 and 3.297 in 2019.
  • Half of the schools with ARES introduced Computer Studies as an examinable subject.
  • 63% employed a Computer Studies teacher through the Teachers Service Commission, which created new jobs.
  • 75% strongly agreed that school administration had become more efficient, and many schools bought management software of their own.
  • Half had bought additional computers or projectors to add to what ARES provided.

Teachers

  • 84% use ICT to plan and deliver lessons, most often with projectors, notebooks and phones.
  • 94% of those trained said the training changed how they teach, and 84% had gone on to train colleagues.
  • Khan Academy and Wikipedia for Schools are the most used ARES modules, followed by TED-Ed, CK-12 and SeaVuria.
  • 74% asked for KICD digital curriculum content to be added. It is now part of the ARES roadmap.

The main request from schools was simple: more notebooks and projectors.
